West Virginia Trip Photos

West Virginia Photos

A variety of photos of the mountain state taken since 8/1997.

This was taken in the Dolly Sods Wilderness in Monongehela National Forest. Notice all the stunted trees with leaves growing only on one side. The red bushes are blueberry bushes in early fall.

This was taken in the Otter Creek Wilderness in Monongehela National Forest. I found these quite interesting. A viewer of this page told me that they are Scally Vase Chanterelle (Gomphus floccosus) mushrooms and that they are poisonous.

This was also taken in the Otter Creek Wilderness in Monongehela National Forest. Many places in the state have carpets of small evergreens like this.

This was taken at Gaudineer Scenic Area in Monongehela National Forest. This is probably the wettest place I have been to in the state. The moss carpets here were very thick and interesting.

This was taken at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Greenbank. The lichen/fungus/etc on the tree was quite common. We also saw an enormous number of deer there.

This was taken in Coopers Rock State Forest. The area near this spot was filled with moss-covered/fern-covered tunnels like this one. Since it is off the beaten path, I won't tell you exactly where it was.

This was also taken at Cooper's Rock State Forest. This particular type of fungus seemed fairly common.

Another photo from Cooper's Rock State Forest. There was some nicely eroded sandstone in this area.
