Summer 2010 - Part 1

Here I am sitting somewhere on the south rim of the grand canyon east of Grand Canyon Village.

This is just a view of the Colorado River as seen from somewhere along the south rim of the grand canyon.

Another view of the canyon from the south rim.

After leaving the canyon, I hiked up Kendrick Mountain. This is one of the many "volcanoes" in the San Francisco peaks area. It is a fantastic hike with about 2400 feet of elevation gain. The mountain in the distance is Humphries peak - the highest point in Arizona. The winter of 2010 was particularly wet so the north face of Humphries had snow into June.

This is the Chapel of the Holy Dove . It is along R 180 between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.

This is a view from near R 180 of the Red Mountain Geologic Area . If you hike back in, there are many interesting tunnels to explore and things to climb. Definitely worth exploring.

These are some tent caterpillars in the Red Mountain geologic area.

This was taken along the West Clear Creek Trail in the West Clear Creek Canyon Wilderness. This is a shelf above the creek. Note the blooming yuccas on the right side of the image.

This is a photo of West Clear Creek itself. The water was very deep in places and filled with fish, frogs and unfortunately (non-native) crayfish. The reddish rocks certainly used to be part of the red canyon walls. Fantastic canyon.

Much later in the summer, I headed to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. This is a photo taken inside Grand Teton of Mount Moran. Note that dark granitic intrusion on the upper left of the peak. Also, the deep snow-filled bowl facing us in the image is actually a glacier.

I am now in Yellowstone National Park. This is lonestar geyser which erupts about every three hours.

This is part of the runoff from lonestar geyser. The color is from the heat loving bacteria that live in these thermal areas. (This was my favorite photo from the trip.)

We are along a boardwalk in the Upper Geyser Basin which contains Old Faithful and many other famous geysers. We were there very early in the morning (before the crowds!) and the cool air temperatures led to more steam from all the features.

This is Chromatic Spring in the upper geyser basin.

This is Riverside Geyser. It is also in the upper geyser basin and lies directly along the Firehole river. We were probably 10 minutes away when the eruption started but fortunately it lasted for quite a while.

This is Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. There was taken "downstream" from the popular viewpoint for this canyon. There is a trail that follows the canyon rim downstream so it was taken from that rim.
