Organizing these by state is getting too complicated, so this is my entire summer 1997 adventure. It consists of pictures from Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. With me on the Wyoming section of the trip were Ralph Williams and Chad Lindhorst.
This is a photo of of lichen taken at Bald Ridge in Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming. This was the starting spot for the backpack (although the photo was actually taken on the way out). This "bald" ridge is covered mostly with lichen-covered boulders.
This is taken near our campsite the first night near Lake Helen. It has a slight bluish tint since it was taken in the shade near the end of the day.
The is Paintrock Creek which runs down from near the top of Cloud Peak (our goal). We camped right near this spot the evening before our summit "attempt". The strong bluish tint is due to the very late hour.
This is simply a nice reflection of a rock near that same campsite.
The day we attempted the summit was far from perfect. Near the top it was raining constantly and it was very slippery due to all the lichen on the rocks. I decided to quit a little past where I took this photo. The wall of Cloud Peak is on the right side of the photo and it looks into a beautiful basin which is somewhat obscured by the foggy conditions.
This is a photo of some Parry Primroses (spelling?) taken on the way down from the summit attempt. These flowers grew where pretty much nothing else would.
This is another view of Paintrock Creek taken after the peak attempt.
This is from the touristy overlook at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area called the Devil's Canyon Overlook. Its a beautiful canyon which wanders from Montana into Wyoming. This overlook is on the Montana side.
This is still in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area on the Montana side. The soil is very colorful here and not too far from this spot I saw about five bighorn sheep.
This is a view of some badlands in Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.
This is a closeup of the lower right section (bright whitish area) of the previous photo which was taken an hour or so later when the sun wasn't hitting the formation.
