A Message From Our Department Head, Shufang Su
After a pause of almost twenty years, I am delighted to announce the revival of the University of Arizona Physics Department newsletter (previously called Physics Matters). With this issue, we relaunch our department’s tradition of sharing news, achievements, and reflections from our community under a new name: The Saguaro Spacetimes.
In physics, spacetime is the fundamental framework in which all physical phenomena unfold. The choice of this title reflects both our sense of place and our intellectual reach. Like the saguaro, our department is deeply rooted in the Sonoran Desert, shaped by resilience, collaboration, and long-term growth. And like spacetime itself, our work spans vast scales—from the smallest constituents of matter to the structure and evolution of the universe—connecting theory, experiment, teaching, and discovery.
The Saguaro Spacetimes will serve as a window into the life of our department. In each issue, we will highlight faculty, student, and alumni accomplishments; share research breakthroughs and educational innovations; celebrate milestones; and strengthen connections across generations of Wildcats in physics and beyond.
I invite you to read, contribute, and help shape this renewed newsletter as a forum for community and conversation. We are proud of where we have been, energized by where we are now, and excited about where we are headed. Thank you for being part of the University of Arizona Physics community, and welcome to the first issue of The Saguaro Spacetimes.
