Every spring, The College of Science recognizes exceptional graduate students from each department with awards in three categories: scholarship, teaching, and service. Join us in congratulating this year's award recipients Parth Kumar, Brianna Billingsley, and Harry Mayrhofer.
Parth Kumar – Graduate Scholarship
Parth has demonstrated exceptional capability in physics research, working on several significant projects. In his letter of recommendation, it was noted:
“Parth is an exceptional doctoral student specializing in quantum thermodynamics and theoretical condensed matter physics. As an award-winning teaching assistant, he has collaborated with me for the past four years and is set to defend his Ph.D. this Spring. Parth possesses a strong interest in condensed matter and quantum theory, is well-read, and is dedicated to understanding key phenomena from fundamental principles.”
Brianna Billingsley – Graduate Service
Brianna has consistently shown her commitment and passion for physics outreach. She has played an instrumental role in the Physicists for Inclusion and Equity initiative. A comment from Brianna's letter reads:
“Wherever Brianna encounters inequity, she creates opportunities for others. From her first semester of graduate school, she has tirelessly worked to improve diversity and inclusion within the department. As the Mentor Chair of Women in Physics, she provides support to her peers in higher education and orchestrates outreach events at local elementary and middle schools. Brianna matches first-year physics graduate students with peer mentors further along in their programs, and she aims to ‘widen the pipeline’ by sharing her love of STEM with schoolchildren through interactive demonstrations and inclusive classroom practices.”
Harry Mayrhofer – Graduate Teaching
Harry has been an exceptional teaching assistant, going above and beyond to support students in their pursuit of knowledge. In recognition of his efforts, it was noted:
“Since his first year as a graduate teaching assistant, Harry has shown a strong commitment to student learning and success. While instructing the algebra-based introductory mechanics labs (PHYS 181), he served as the primary point of contact for students, guiding them through both lab assignments and the fundamental physics principles behind them. To accommodate students who were not enrolled in the associated lecture course, Harry ensured his explanations were detailed and accessible. He emphasized clear and open communication regarding expectations and course logistics, creating a structured and supportive learning environment. His flexibility in working around students’ schedules while maintaining high academic standards further exemplifies his dedication.”
The Department of Physics extends its heartfelt thanks to Parth, Brianna, and Harry for their outstanding commitment to our field, our department, and, most importantly, to their fellow students, faculty, and colleagues.
