The Department of Physics maintains a broad, internationally recognized research program spanning the full range of modern physics, from fundamental particles to the large-scale structure of the universe, and stretching the limits of what's possible in the manipulation of matter and energy. Faculty research is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, with many members serving in leadership roles in major national and international scientific efforts. The excellence of this work is reflected in substantial external funding and in numerous recent honors, including NSF, DOE, and AFOSR early-career awards, Sloan and Packard Fellowships, international prizes, multiple College of Science and University awards, and the election of ten faculty and several emeritus faculty and joint faculty as Fellows of the American Physical Society.
Collectively, the Physics Department at the University of Arizona sustains a vibrant, diverse, and highly impactful research enterprise. Its faculty lead major collaborations, train the next generation of scientists, and produce discoveries that advance fundamental knowledge while connecting physics to technology, astronomy, biology, and quantum science.
