On May 7, 2026, University of Arizona Physics undergraduates presented their research at the annual Lucy Engel Undergraduate Research Symposium. The event featured both oral presentations and poster sessions. Students presented research across a broad range of physics topics while building their skills in communicating their work and engaging with faculty and peers.

Faculty judges will select outstanding presenters from each session, with awardees to be announced at the Department of Physics graduation ceremony on Friday May 15, 2026.

Presentations
  • Raj Ahir Subleading Operators in Soft Collinear Effective Theory
  • David Krug How Isotope Substitutions Affect Electron Dynamics in Methyliodide
  • Grace Gibbins Exploring Propagation of Light in Media & Gravity
  • Julio Corona Training Large-Radius Jet Identification Algorithms at ATLAS for Reduced Mass Dependence
  • Jorge Blanquer Redondo Using Biased Monte Carlo method for black hole SED modelling
  • Henry Arnpriester Maximum entropy sampling for exoplanet transit follow-up observations
  • Sepehr Salamat Black Hole Meissner Effect and Singular Extremal Horizons

The department extends its sincere thanks to the symposium organizers, David Smith, Katie Butcher and Kyle Rine for their thoughtful planning and coordination, and to the many faculty, staff, and volunteers who contributed to the event’s success.

A heartfelt thank you is also extended to our benefactor, John Engel, whose ongoing support continues to make this symposium possible. Established in memory of his mother, Lucy Engel, the symposium honors her legacy as a champion of education. Though she was unable to complete a four-year college degree, Lucy ensured that her children had that opportunity. Her generosity extended beyond her family, helping many others pursue higher education. Her bequest to the University of Arizona, along with contributions to other institutions, reflects her lifelong commitment to learning and opportunity.

The Lucy Engel Undergraduate Research Symposium remains a cornerstone event for the department, celebrating undergraduate achievement and fostering a strong culture of research and academic excellence.
