Professor Ubirajara (Bira) van Kolck has been selected as one of only two college-wide honorees for the 2026 College of Science Rieke Prize, an exceptional distinction recognizing outstanding scientific creativity and impact. Although the final prize was awarded to a single recipient, Professor Dennis Zaritsky of Astronomy, being named an honoree from a competitive pool of 14 nominations across all College of Science departments underscores the remarkable breadth and influence of Professor van Kolck’s contributions.
A world leader in theoretical nuclear physics, Professor van Kolck is internationally known for pioneering the development of nuclear effective field theories (EFTs). His work established a rigorous framework that anchors nuclear forces to the Standard Model of particle physics, moving the field beyond ad hoc methods toward systematically controlled, precise calculations. This foundational advance has enabled accurate modeling of much larger nuclear systems than previously possible and has opened new avenues for understanding the internal structure of neutron stars. His unique research program further extends into atomic physics, where his theories have predicted properties of boson clusters, and into searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.
Professor van Kolck’s leadership in the field is also reflected in his membership in the Academia Europaea and his role as Director of the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*). This honor also adds to his distinguished record of achievements, including the Herman Feshbach Prize in Theoretical Nuclear Physics and the Henry and Phyllis Koffler Prize in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity.
The Department of Physics congratulates Professor van Kolck on this well‑deserved recognition and celebrates his continued impact on both the scientific community and our college.
