David Smith Receives College of Science Distinguished Advising Award
The Department of Physics congratulates David Smith on receiving the 2026 College of Science Distinguished Advising Award, recognizing his exceptional commitment to student success, academic innovation, and service to the University of Arizona.
For nearly a decade, David has served as an academic advisor for the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, supporting students as they navigate academic challenges, explore opportunities, and achieve their educational goals. His compassionate, student-centered approach has made him a trusted mentor and advocate for hundreds of students across both departments.
Reflecting on his work, David shared:
The most meaningful part of my work is seeing students I advise graduate and accomplish the goals they once shared with me. Witnessing their growth, perseverance, and resilience continues to inspire me and strengthens my commitment to student success and to advancing the advising profession.
Beyond advising, David has developed resources that enhance the student experience, including the Physics & Astronomy Newsletter and curriculum planning tools that help students navigate complex degree pathways. He has also played a key role in mentoring fellow advisors, improving campus-wide systems, and supporting major departmental events such as the Lucy Engel Undergraduate Research Symposium and the Spring Physics Graduation and Awards Ceremony.
Colleagues across Physics, Astronomy, and the College of Science praised David's professionalism, leadership, and dedication to students, describing him as an invaluable resource whose contributions have strengthened advising within his departments and across the broader university community.
Please join us in congratulating David on this well-deserved recognition and thanking him for his continued dedication to our students and community!
