UA Physics Alumnus John Edwards Creates Semiconductor Graduate Scholarship
The University of Arizona Department of Physics is proud to announce the establishment of the John R. and Karen Edwards Graduate Scholarship, made possible through a generous $90,000 commitment over two years from alumnus Dr. John R. Edwards and his wife, Karen Edwards.
John Edwards earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from the University of Arizona in 1961, as part of the program’s first graduating cohort. He went on to complete a master’s degree at the Stevens Institute of Technology and a PhD from the University of Illinois. His distinguished career spanned decades in the semiconductor industry, including work at Bell Labs, leadership roles at American Microsystems and Intel, and service as chair of the International Reliability Physics Symposium.
Throughout his career and into retirement, Edwards has remained committed to mentorship and service, including his work with SCORE.org, where he advised nonprofit startup leaders. His connection to the department has remained strong over the years, highlighted by a recent visit to campus with his family, where he reconnected with faculty and explored the department’s current research and teaching initiatives.
Inspired in part by his own experiences as a student, balancing full-time coursework, multiple jobs, and family responsibilities without scholarship support, Dr. Edwards and his wife chose to invest in future generations of scientists and engineers. The newly established John R. and Karen Edwards Graduate Scholarship will support students enrolled in the University of Arizona’s Semiconductor Science and Technology master’s programs, including both the accelerated BS/MS pathway and the traditional two-year master's program. The scholarship aims to expand access to advanced training in a field that is central to innovation and national competitiveness.
